PA Program hosts marrow donor registry drive

On February 3, 2016, the Wake Forest PA Program hosted a marrow donor registry drive for Be The Match, an arm of the National Marrow Donor Program. Be The Match manages the largest and most diverse bone marrow registry in the world and is a program that the Class of 2017 wanted to get involved with. The event was set up by our student body, led by Class of 2017 member Lindsay Hoffman, in coordination with the Be The Match organization.

“Setting up the drive was surprisingly easy,” said Hoffman. “I got in touch with Addie Sanders, the regional Be the Match representative, and we worked together to coordinate a date. She provided all the preliminary information and even drove to Winston-Salem from Charlotte with all of the supplies needed to set up the event.”

“Getting involved is really simple” said Hannah Roeder, a first-year student who volunteered in setting up the drive. “For people who want to donate, it just requires filling out some paperwork and swabbing your cheek. I think the process is a lot simpler than most people expect. Total, it probably takes 10 minutes or less!”

Thousands of patients with blood cancers or other diseases need marrow transplants to survive, and 70% of those patients needing transplant do not have matching donors in their family. This is why it is so important to volunteer to donate. Be The Match has been in operation for 25 years and has 12.5 million total registered donors, but only 1 in 500 of those registered will match with a patient in need.
