PA students join App State for interprofessional education event

This past October, students and faculty from the Boone campus of the PA Program participated in an interprofessional education event at Appalachian State University that was designed by faculty representatives from several disciplines within the App State Beaver College of Health Sciences and the Wake Forest PA Program. The activity consisted of two parts. During the first part, 12 Boone PA students worked on their own through a case of a high school athlete with a concussion, answering questions and discussing how a PA would approach this patient. Then the students gathered in the Convocation Center on Appalachian State’s campus to work through the case interprofessionally with 211 App State undergraduate seniors and graduate students; three faculty members from the Boone PA program and 22 App State faculty were on hand as small-group facilitators. During the final wrap up for the group as a whole, an interprofessional panel of faculty experts summarized key points and answered questions brought up during the roundtable discussions. The departments represented included PA Studies, Social Work, Nursing, Health and Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Recreation Management and Physical Education, and Communication Sciences and Disorders.

An interprofessional event was held in April 2015 for Winston-Salem and Boone students, and another Winston-Salem-based event is planned with the medical school this spring. PA accreditation standards require the PA Program curriculum to include instruction in working collaboratively in interprofessional patient-centered teams.
