Academic Pathways

Academic Pathways: Clinical and Research Scholarship Opportunities

The faculty and fellows in our section are engaged in exciting and productive investigation in a number of areas. During the first year of fellowship, each fellow develops their own ideas for investigation with mentoring from our faculty. This process, guided by our fellowship research committee, culminates in an initial choice between one of our two academic pathways, and a project proposal that undergoes review to ensure the best chances for fellow success.

 Academic Pathways

During the second and third fellowship years, each fellow will be given protected time to pursue their chosen project. Most fellows will require between six and twelve months of academic time; the timing and structure is individualized based on fellow and project need. During academic rotations, fellows provide quarterly “Research In Progress” updates to the section for ongoing feedback from our faculty as a whole. At the completion of their academic time, fellows typically present a culminating summary of their work during Pulmonary and Critical Care Grand Rounds. Each year many of our fellows also present their work for national audiences at conferences such as ATS, CHEST, and SCCM.
