General Urology

As a major research center and referral center, the urologists at Wake Forest Baptist are experts in caring for the most complicated and difficult cases. So it only makes sense that patients also turn to them for common conditions such as urinary tract infection and enlarged prostate.
Our physicians are experts in the full range of urologic conditions for both men and women. For example:
Enlarged prostate: We offer the complete range of minimally invasive in-office treatments for enlarged prostate and are one of few centers in the country selected to test a new high-energy source to simulate the effects of surgery.
Male Incontinence: Male incontinence is an increasing problem because of the number of men undergoing surgery for prostate cancer or enlarged prostate. We offer an artificial sphincter as well a new "sling" device. Many patients who have the procedures wish they'd sought treatment years earlier.
Male Menopause: Male menopause isn't just a myth, though the actual term for a decline in male hormones is "andropause." Symptoms can include loss of energy, bone loss and a decline in libido. Treatment can be controversial in men with prostate cancer, and we specialize in evaluations and in helping men understand treatment options.
Painful Bladder Syndrome: Because its symptoms are similar to endometriosis, kidney stones and urinary tract infection, it takes the average patient five years to be correctly diagnosed. While interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome isn’t curable, the condition can be effectively managed. With the right treatment, IC patients can get better.
Pelvic organ prolapse: The Continence Center specializes in using mesh to support the organs through a vaginal approach – reducing recovery time. Hospital stays average one to two days, compared to six days for traditional surgery. In addition, recovery times are cut in half, from four to two weeks.
