Faculty and Clinical Team

Our faculty is unique in the region, combining board-certified, fellowship-trained specialists in both vascular surgery and vascular medicine in one program. Our physicians have more than 60 years of combined experience caring for patients with vascular disease and training the next generation of vascular specialists.

Our nurses, technicians and administrative staff are committed to facilitating assessment and care through our clinics and diagnostic services as well as in-hospital services for diagnosis, treatment and research.   

For patients, this translates into a comprehensive evaluation culminating in an integrated care plan including medical therapies with minimally-invasive "endovascular" procedures or traditional open surgery when indicated, for the entire spectrum of vascular diseases.

Richard H. Dean, MD, FACS

President Emeritus of Wake Forest University Health Sciences and Professor Emeritus of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1968. He completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Hospital in 1974 and a Fellowship in General Vascular at Northwestern University in 1975. Dr. Dean has served as a Director of the American Board of Surgery and served on the committee of General Vascular Surgery. His special interests include renovascular hypertension and ischemic nephropathy.

His NIH-funded research and intramurally supported projects emphasize clinical outcomes and the natural history of vascular disease. Dr. Hansen’s special clinical interests include complex aortic, renal, and visceral artery reconstruction.

Dr. Geary also has a cross-appointment in the Wake Forest University Primate Center.  In 1994, Dr. Geary was recruited from the University of Washington, Seattle.  While in Seattle, Dr. Geary was awarded an American Heart Association research fellowship in the laboratory of Alexander W. Clowes, MD, working on regulation of vascular smooth muscle cell growth by blood flow and shear stress, as well as on viral vectors for vascular gene transfer. He directs the Vascular Biology Research Laboratory, exploring how atherosclerotic arteries heal following reconstruction, and has a busy clinical practice in vascular surgery.

Dr Godshall joined the Vascular Surgery department in July 2008 as an Assistant Professor. He completed training as a pharmacist prior to obtaining his MD degree, both at Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Godshall assumed a faculty position at the University of Louisville until joining us in 2008. His clinical interests include multidisciplinary limb salvage, aortic reconstruction, venous pathology, and endovascular interventions.

Matthew S. Edwards, MD, FACS

Dr. Edwards currently is the recipient of a K-23 grant from the National Institutes of Health and an American Vascular Association Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award. These awards were granted to assist in his work investigating the effects (and prevention) of atheroembolization during percutaneous renal artery revascularization. He is also involved in numerous other research projects, both institutional and industry-funded, examining issues related to renovascular disease, stroke prevention, aortic aneurysms, and lower extremity occlusive disease. Dr. Edwards' clinical interests include endovascular surgery, carotid disease, lower extremity revascularization, and renal artery disease.

Dr. Levy is heading the Vascular Medicine Clinic and his special clinical interests include medical management of complex peripheral vascular diseases, vascular diseases in the younger patients, hypercoagulable states, and venous thromboembolism. Dr. Levy's clinical research includes investigation into the mechanisms of premature atherosclerosis, specifically PAD; medical management of PAD; outcome studies in hypertension; long-term DVT treatment, and hypercoagulable states.
