Engaging in Open Innovation with Industry
Wake Forest Innovations is responsible for accelerating the commercialization of the ideas, discoveries and specialized research capabilities of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Wake Forest Innovations establishes arrangements with industry across a broad range of scientific and clinical research operations, including agreements for the development and commercialization of proprietary technologies and products, contracts to provide specialized preclinical and clinical research services, and agreements to sponsor basic scientific research.
Core departments include: Product Innovation Services, responsible for investing in and developing proprietary technology ready for licensing; Contract Research & Development Services, responsible for structuring and managing the provision of specialized preclinical and clinical research capabilities to industry; and Industry Relations & Business Development, responsible for engaging industry with an open innovation model to commercialize proprietary products and specialized research capabilities through licensing, sponsored research and fee-for-service contracts.
Industry Relations & Business Development
Industry Relations & Business Development offers several core services for faculty and staff including: Business Development, Market Analytics, Intellectual Property Management, Technology Licensing, New Company Formation and Incubation, and Contract R&D Services Sales.
Product Innovation Services
Product Innovation Services stimulates and invests in the creation of innovation technology, products and services, and licenses these to existing and start-up companies. This group proactively engages researchers to facilitate product ideation, invention disclosure, intellectual property protection and business planning. Product Innovation Services also financially supports researchers through prototyping and proof of concept studies to translate nascent discoveries into commercially viable products.
Contract Research & Development Services
Contract Research & Development Services structures and manages Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s scientific assets available to industry partners. The group directly manages Preclinical Translational Services, which offers surgical services for medical device and procedure testing, and therapeutic testing services. Contract Research & Development Services also manages the Center for Applied Learning, a core learning laboratory at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center that provides experiential, immersive learning services for faculty and partners.
