Is Weight Loss Surgery right for me?
Weight loss surgery is only successful if the patient makes a lifelong commitment. That is why you should make the decision after careful consideration of the risks and benefits and fully understand the lifestyle changes required after surgery. Weight Loss Surgery is only one tool. It is most effective if patients follow recommended nutrition and fitness guidelines.
You can learn more about our weight loss options at one of our free weekly seminars. We highly recommend that anyone interested in our program attend one of our seminars before making an appointment.
Pre-registration is highly recommended. Sign up online or by calling 336-716-WAKE (9253).
Am I morbidly obese?
Answering that question may help you decide whether to pursue weight loss surgery. You are likely morbidly obese if you are:
- More than 100 pounds over your ideal body weight; or
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40; or
- Have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing severe negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes
Use our BMI Calculator.
Surgical Weight Loss: What to Expect Before Your Procedure
We encourage all patients to attend one of our free weekly seminars to learn about all of our weight loss options, which include both bariatric and gastric surgery options, as well asour Medical Weight Loss program. Whether or not you attend, one of our surgeons will help you decide which surgery is best for you and your needs.
We perform an in-depth nutrition, fitness and psychological evaluation of every patient in our clinic. This introduction allows us to get to know you as an individual and better understand your weight issues and medical background. It also helps us design a personalized treatment plan for your surgery and recovery.
Some patients may need to make dietary changes to lose weight before their procedure. After surgery, all patients will be required to exercise and follow a new eating plan. Learn more about Life After Surgery.
Laparoscopic Surgery Means Faster Recovery
In most cases, our patients undergo laparoscopic - or minimally-invasive - procedures, not open surgery. This technique allows surgeons to work with tiny instruments and cameras inserted through small abdominal incisions.
Benefits include:
- Less pain after surgery
- Easier breathing and lung function and higher oxygen levels after surgery
- Fewer wound complications, such as infection or hernia
- Faster recovery and return to pre-surgery activity levels
Some patients may not be candidates for laparoscopic surgery, either due to body restrictions or for health reasons. Our surgeons are highly experienced in open surgery as well.
