What Is Diversity?

The WFBMC Value of Diversity is defined as honoring individuality and protecting the dignity of all. The Council for Inclusion and Diversity is grounded in 2 concepts that promote this key value.

  1. Diversity is all the ways in which we are similar to and different from one another. Obvious similarities and differences are such things as race, gender, and age. Less observable examples are education, socio-economic status, family situation, religion, or politics.
  2. Inclusion means creating a climate where all people feel welcomed and valued. Inclusion moves a culture from understanding and accepting diversity to seeking and celebrating diversity. Inclusive groups believe that the widest representation of diversity is essential to their identity and success.

Council initiatives start at the Medical Center and will expand to the community. At the Medical Center, the Council seeks to enhance or improve processes and practices to foster an inclusive environment. Activities focus on examining and recommending changes in policies, development opportunities, celebrations, communication tools, and recruitment and retention plans. The Council works with others in the Medical Center to advance cultural competence in caring for patients and their families. In the future, the Council will seek opportunities to continue expanding diversity and inclusion efforts in the community.

Basic Computer Classes Target Entry-Level Employees

Funded by a stimulus grant, the classes target entry-level employees, with the goal of providing skill development that can lead to career advancement. In particular, the Council of Inclusion and Diversity hopes to address the over-representation of minorities in entry-level positions.
