Workshop Addresses Diversity in Hiring Practices

Medical Center leaders discussed best practices for applying diversity to search and hiring practices, in a workshop held Feb. 7 at WFBMC.

Co-sponsored by Organizational Development and the Council for Inclusion and Diversity, the Searching for Excellence and Diversity Workshop drew 57 leaders from across the Medical Center. The workshop was led by the Women in Science & Engineering Leadership Institute (WISELI), a research center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Searching for Excellence and Diversity Workshop was presented to support the Medical Center's ongoing commitment to build a diverse workforce. Wake Forest Baptist joins organizations across the country that are growing in their understanding of the importance of diversity and acting on that awareness, said Kristin Berglund, Senior Internal Consultant for Organizational Development.

"Organizations are starting to realize that it is very valuable to have a diverse employee population, in every sense of the word," said Berglund. "It's our diversity that helps our organization achieve its strategic outcomes."

"A diverse workforce brings broad ideas and perspectives that expand our abilities in all of our work areas," said Cheryl Locke, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. "As we grow in our diversity, we become stronger as an organization."

The Medical Center's commitment to diversity was demonstrated by the number of leaders who took part in the WISELI workshop to learn more about applying diversity to the talent selection process, Locke said. "I applaud the enthusiasm of all those who participated," she said.

Internal program facilitators are currently exploring ways to follow up on the workshop by making content available to other Medical Center leaders and Search Committee leaders on an ongoing basis.
