Dr. Andrea Doud is the 2013-2015 CIPT Scholar. On behalf of CIPT, Dr. Doud will work with the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University Center for Injury Biomechanics to further define pediatric trauma patients, identify the injuries needing immediate treatment at a designated trauma center, and design a project to incorporate these injuries into an algorithm to expedite this process.

Dr. Doud believes that although unintentional injury remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population, there are many aspects of the evaluation and management of such patients that can be improved upon. For example, studies show that timely transport to an appropriate trauma center can reduce death in motor vehicle crashes by 24%. The current automatic crash notification (ACN) systems in vehicles.

Ultimately, Dr. Doud's work will help create an advanced ACN system to predict which crashes are likely to contain pediatric occupants with injuries needing treatment at a Level I or II trauma center.
