The Difference Between Ophthalmologists, Optometrists and Opticians

Our team includes ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians which can sometimes be confusing.

An ophthalmologist is a doctor who specializes in eye disease and eye surgery. Some of our ophthalmologists have further training in a specific area of medical or surgical eye care (subspecialties).

Optometrists are health care professionals who provide primary vision care, including annual and general eye examinations, to determine and correct vision problems and to manage vision changes, most often through the use of glasses or contact lenses.

Opticians are technicians trained to design, verify and fit eyeglass lenses and frames, contact lenses and other devices to correct eyesight. These professionals use the prescriptions supplied by ophthalmologists or optometrists, but do not test vision or write prescriptions themselves.
