Question: What brought you to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center?

Answer: I'm originally from Clemson, South Carolina. I came to Wake Forest Baptist in 1999 to do my residency in Internal Medicine and then stayed to be on the faculty for one year. I left for five years to work at the Veterans Administration but returned to the Medical Center last year. I missed working with the residents and medical students plus I wanted a more varied patient population than I had at the VA.

Q: What are your clinical specialties?

A: I specialize in the primary care of adults with an emphasis on preventing and treating chronic disease. My focus is care of the "whole patient" - I am trained to manage multiple chronic medical conditions and coordinate care of multiple subspecialists.

Q: What is your patient care philosophy?

A: I enjoy preventive care and focusing on a team-based approach with the patient to prevent problems and treat existing illness. I feel patients are responsible for much of their health and wellness, and I promote healthy lifestyle choices they can make. I try to be practical about costs as this is often important to many patients: I try to prescribe generic medications if these will work well for the patient and try to keep tests to a minimum.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with patients?

A. I enjoy seeing how happy patients become when they realize that a lifestyle change has profoundly improved a medical condition. An example of this are diabetic patients who dramatically improve their glucose control by losing just five to ten pounds. These results make patients realize they have more control over their illness than they originally thought.

Q: What are fun facts we should know about you?

I'm married to Richard Alexander who builds custom homes and we have three children. We enjoy camping, biking and any outdoor activity.
