Dr. Frank “Chip” Celestino is a specialist in family medicine. Below is a brief profile about him.

Celestino Frank SFrank “Chip” Celestino, MD
Family & Community Medicine
1920 West 1st Street, Piedmont Plaza I
Winston-Salem
336-716-WAKE

Medical Degree: University of Rochester School of Medicine
Residency: Madigan Army Medical Center
Fellowship: University of North Carolina
Board Certification: American Board of Family Medicine (CAQ in Geriatric Medicine)

Question: What brought you to Wake Forest Baptist?

Answer: I grew up in Rhode Island and was trained in the Northeast and Northwest. After 10 years as an academic military physician, I decided to leave the military and pursue an academic career in the civilian world. My wife and I had two small children at the time and since my wife's family had retired to Durham, I thought it would be ideal to find an academic position in North Carolina. Also, as an avid basketball fan, I wanted to become involved with an ACC school. Wake Forest University fit the bill perfectly.

Q: What are your clinical specialties?

A: I am board-certified in Family Medicine and have an added certificate of qualifications in geriatrics. In addition, I have had extensive procedural training and serve as one of our department’s “proceduralists” who perform and supervise sigmoidoscopies, colposcopies, IUD placements, vasectomies, nasopharyngoscopies, cardiac stress tests, and minor skin procedures such as biopsies and contraceptive implantations. Another of my key roles is serving as the chairman of our Medical Center’s Bioethics Consultation Service.

Q: What is your philosophy in working with patients?

A: I believe in relationship-centered patient care. This means that patients are active partners in all efforts to optimize their health and physical well-being.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with patients?

A: Even though nearly 50 percent of my practice is caring for the elderly, I particularly enjoy the variety of patients we see in family medicine. We take great pride in providing comprehensive care across the entire age spectrum. Our current medical system is both complex and fragmented. Therefore, I feel it is the primary care physician's role to serve as an advocate for patients as they interact with this system.

Q: What type of volunteer and/or community activities are you involved in?

A: I am actively involved in my church choir where I serve as lead tenor (there are only three of us!). My love of Broadway and show tunes has led me to be an actor and singer in several Winston-Salem Twin City Stage (formerly Little Theatre) productions. I have also served on the board of directors of the theatre. I continue to serve on the board of directors of the North Carolina Housing Foundation, a philanthropic organization which helps to build dignified housing for low income individuals.

Q: What fun facts should we know about you?

A: I am an avid sports fan – some would say sports junkie. Though I enjoy many sports, golf is my one true love. I suspect I may be the only faculty member who plays fantasy golf in addition to the real thing. I also enjoy dressing in elaborate costumes for Halloween. My moustache (and a large sword purchased off E-Bay) helped me to mimic Zorro a few years ago.
