Memory Assessment Clinic Counseling Center

In response to the growing number of families affected by memory loss and dementia, Dr. Edward Shaw started the Memory Assessment Clinic Counseling Center (MACCC), a partnership between the Section on Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine and the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University.  The MACCC provides counseling services to patients diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, or another form of dementia, as well as their family members.  Two support groups are also facilitated by the Center-the Early Journey Support Group is for couples in which one member has a form of dementia or mild cognitive impairment, and the Caregiver Support Group is for caregivers of patients with dementia.

The MACCC is staffed by four licensed professional counselors: Edward G. Shaw, MD, MA (director), Philip Clarke, PhD, Rabeena Alli, MA (clinic coordinator), and Nathaniel Ivers, PhD.  Volunteer counselors include Brian Neth, Wake Forest MD-PhD student, Christina Hugenschmidt, PhD, Sticht Center scientist and counselor, and Brian Calhoun, MA, licensed professional counselor.  The MACCC allows patients/families to talk about their journey with dementia, help them learn as much as possible about the disease, and meet the associated challenges.  The Center is currently caring for more than 100 families affected by a dementia diagnosis.  All services are provided at no charge as operational expenses are supported by donations.
