Office of Research

Full-time regular, 40 hours/week

Job Summary: Supports investigator submission of administratively compliant research proposals. Reviews proposals for compliance with sponsor requirements; counsels investigators on compliance inconsistencies. Provides for accurate and timely pre- and post-award management of grants, contracts, and subcontracts for the Institution through a centralized Office of Sponsored Programs. Ensures administrative actions are consistent with federal laws and regulations and sponsor (Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, foundations, etc.) and Institution specific requirements, regulations, and policies. Serves as a source of information and advice for professional and scientific staff regarding sponsor and institutional policies, procedures, and requirements. Serves as liaison between Investigators and administrators and agency officials, including the National Institutes of Health and other federal, state and local offices. Displays good communication skills, a customer service orientation, and demonstrates work and unit professionalism. Performs other duties as assigned.

FUNCTION OF JOB

Under administrative review, responsible for developing, creating, reviewing, and negotiating industry-sponsored research-related agreements. Responsible for development, review, and negotiation of material transfer agreements with other academic institutions. Provide guidance to investigators interested in pursuing industry-sponsored research; participate in the formulation and implementation of policies regarding industry-sponsored research.

CHARACTERISTIC WORK

1. Develop, review, analyze, and negotiate contracts for research-related agreements, ensuring contracts are in compliance with all current regulatory, legal, fiscal, and institutional requirements and policies.

2. Provide financial review and verify appropriate institutional expenses and fees are included in budgets and payment terms will ensure receipt of full reimbursement of budgeted amount. Assist with developing and negotiation of budget and payment terms as requested.

3. Manage contract negotiations between institution and external professionals at pharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology companies, as well as other academic institutions to ensure timely review and completion of institutionally acceptable contracts.

4. Consult with Director, Legal Department, and institutional management as appropriate relevant to contract language, financial, and post-execution issues.

5. Provide consultation and guidance to investigators, research personnel, and other individuals, both internal and external, regarding fiscal, regulatory, and legal requirements and policies governing research contracts entered into by the institution.

6. Provide post-execution monitoring of agreements such as industry adherence to payment schedules and questions or disputes surrounding obligations under confidentiality, publication, and invention provisions.

7. Assist in the development of contract strategies, identifying areas of risk based upon contract reviews and discussions with companies/other academic institutions.

8. Represent and promote the School and its research activities and achievements at regional meetings.

9. Assist in the formulation and implementation of policies and procedures relating to the administration of industry-sponsored research.

10. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND GIVEN

Oral and/or written instructions are received from supervision. Provide direction and guidance to support personnel.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor's degree in business administration or law, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Three years of related experience in research administration, contract review, negotiation, or comparable responsibilities.
3. Analytical and independent decision-making skills.
4. Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
5. Strong oral and written communication skills.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

1. Demonstrated persuasion and negotiation skills.
2. Completion of paralegal courses or courses taken in contract law.
3. Ability to compose business contract terms and language.
