PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES - SOCIAL SCIENCES

Full-time Regular, 40 hours/week

Wake Forest School of Medicine seeks a full-time postdoctoral trainee to become an integral part of a newly-funded Center for Regulatory Research on Tobacco Communication (CRRTC). CRRTC is one of 14 Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS) funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Center is co-located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at Wake Forest School of Medicine. This position will be located at Wake Forest, in Winston-Salem, NC. The Center will contribute to tobacco control regulatory science by conducting an interrelated series of real world studies among vulnerable populations and across the developmental lifespan to improve messages about cigarette smoke constituents, emerging tobacco products, and FDA's regulatory authority over tobacco products.

Under the direction of the PI, the postdoctoral trainee will work on a study to develop and test effective risk communication messages for novel tobacco products, including hookahs, flavored cigars, electronic cigarettes, and dissolvables, which are commonly used by adolescents and young adults. The trainee will have the opportunity to participate in the design and implementation of focus groups, phone and web surveys, message development and message testing. The trainee will assist with study design, implementation, data analysis, and interpretation and publication of study findings.In addition to these project-specific activities, the trainee will develop his or her own research questions related to tobacco control regulatory science, and will receive multidisciplinary training and mentorship from senior researchers at the Center. As a trainee in the Center, fellows will participate in a journal club, an in-person speaker series, and the TCORS webinar program (sharing results with other TCORS sites). They will also be encouraged to participate in grant writing courses and trainings. Funds will be available for travel to 1-2 conferences a year to present research findings.

The Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy consists of 16 primary faculty members and 11 joint faculty members holding primary appointments in other departments (e.g., Biostatistics, Communication, Epidemiology and Prevention, Pediatrics, and Health and Exercise Science). Research interests of the current faculty include alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use; cancer prevention (including tobacco control); obesity; physical activity; HIV/AIDS prevention; women's health; and cognition. Fellows will have the opportunity to interact with department faculty with a variety of expertise.

Qualifications/Education:

Qualified individuals must have completed a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree and must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status.
