Thomas E. Sibert, MD, MBA

Thomas E. Sibert, MD, MBA, is Interim Chair of Psychiatry and Special Advisor to the CEO regarding Medicaid and health care reform strategies until his planned retirement in August 2014. He served as President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Wake Forest Baptist Health from 2010 until March 1, 2014.

Sibert led the transition of Wake Forest University Physicians into an integrated health care system, transformed quality and patient safety programs at the Medical Center and personally led the majority of accountable care strategies.

He is recognized as a national thought leader in the areas of quality and patient experience. He came to Wake Forest Baptist in September 2009 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he had served as associate vice chancellor and president of the Faculty Practice Group and adjunct professor of psychiatry for the David Geffen School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry at UCLA. Prior to his UCLA appointment, Sibert served six years as the executive vice president for clinical services for the UNC Health Care System and medical director and CEO for UNC Physicians and Associates at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sibert earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and a master’s in business administration from Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He is presently a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry, with professional and research interests in depressive disorders, electroconvulsive therapy, performance improvement and organizational change. He serves on a number of national bodies in quality, physician development, and hospital processes.
