Life Support Education
The Department of Life Support Education offers basic and advanced resuscitation courses for hospital and school of medicine employees, as well as interested individuals in the community.
Our dedicated staff is committed to providing individuals with the latest evidence-based resuscitation education available. Our courses provide participants with up-to-date information and hands on practice according to the most current American Heart Association recommendations for Emergency Cardiac Care.
What's New in 2014?
PEARS Course (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization)
The PEARS course is an alternative to the PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) course. PEARS is for healthcare providers such as medical/surgical nurses, pediatric clinic staff, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and any other healthcare provider who infrequently sees critically ill infants and children.
• Pediatric assessment
• Assessment and management of respiratory problems
• Recognition and management of shock
• Identification and management of cardiac arrest
• Resuscitation team concept
We will teach a pilot course in April and add additional courses if the pilot course is successful. Registration for the pilot course will be by invitation to ensure an adequate sampling of various staff members.
ACLS and PALS Students: Remember, You Must Score at Least 80 on the Precourse Self Assessment!
It is a requirement that students score at least an 80% on the precourse self-assessment for ACLS & PALS courses. They must print the results and bring them to class. The printed results will serve as a “ticket” to get into class (screen shot on smart phone is acceptable). Students that do not complete the assessment, do not score at least 80%, or forget to bring the results will not be permitted to attend the class. This is a 60 question exam and it is recommended that you start early in order to achieve the required score.
The precourse assessment may be completed at:
ACLS Courses enter code: “compression”
PALS Courses enter code: “palsprovider”
NRP Online Exam
The NRP exam must be taken online before coming to class. Students will be allowed one attempt to pass the exam free of charge. If they fail the exam they will be charged $16 for each additional attempt. It is important that students read the textbook before attempting the exam. Students will be instructed how to access the online exam once they have registered for class.
For your convenience, we are still offering combined courses for students that need both ACLS and BLS or PALS and BLS. These courses allow you to complete your BLS and ACLS refresher or your BLS and PALS refresher in a one day format.
Bringing Children to Class
Please do not bring children to class with you. We do not have facilities to accommodate this and some of the content related to resuscitation may not be appropriate for children. Imagine if all 32 students brought a child to class with them. This is a liability issue for us and if you bring your child to class, we will ask you to reschedule for another class.
Inclement Weather Policy
Because much preparation goes into scheduling the dates for our classes at Life Support Education, we do not cancel classes for inclement weather unless extreme circumstances are present. There are very few days that we are not holding some type of class in our classrooms; therefore, rescheduling a canceled class would be virtually impossible. However, due to the distance many students drive to attend our classes, we realize that not all students will be able to attend a class in hazardous weather conditions. If this is the case, please call (336-716-2800) or e-mail (email@example.com) us as soon as possible and we will reschedule you for a future class.
In the unlikely event that classes are canceled, we will make every effort to post a notice either on this website or on our voicemail (336-716-2800).
