Wake Forest Baptist Urologist Named a Physician of the Year

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Feb. 27, 2013 - Gopal Badlani, M.D., professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Urology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, is one of three physicians nationwide selected to receive a Physician of the Year Award for Clinical Excellence from Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.

The Clinical Excellence Award recognizes physicians who exemplify excellence in clinical medical practice. This is the eighth year the organization has sponsored the awards. Badlani will receive the award March 18 in New York City.

"Dr. Badlani has made significant contributions to the field of urology during his 30-year career," said Anthony Atala, M.D., W.H. Boyce professor and chair of urology. "He is committed to the very best in patient care and we are proud that he is part of our practice."

Badlani is recognized as a world expert in the field of urinary incontinence and has been invited nationally and internationally as a visiting professor. He currently serves as Secretary General of the American Urological Association and was recently appointed to the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Badlani was a leader in establishing the scientific basis for use of grafts in a minimally invasive approach to repair pelvic organ prolapse using a mesh sling. He has also led research on minimally invasive treatments for benign prostate obstruction.

Badlani's special interest is volunteer work in underdeveloped countries and he previously served on the board of International Volunteers in Urology. Badlani has worked with the International Organization of Women's Disorders for surgical care of obstetric complications in Niger and other underserved areas. In another international project, Badlani brought together two organizations, International Volunteers in Urology and Jeev Sewa Sansthan, in a project to care for the underserved in India. As a result, more than 6,000 people have received urologic care over the past 15 years. He volunteers in Winston-Salem at the community care center.

Badlani completed his urological training at Long Island Jewish and then went on to do a fellowship in Neurourology at Baylor University in Houston. He is the editor of several textbooks and has authored more than 200 publications and book chapters.
