General Information for Patients and Visitors

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

  • Why am I going to the hospital?
  • What treatment is needed and how long will it take?
  • What are the risks and benefits of treatment?
  • Do I have other options?
  • When I go home, what kind of help will I need with daily activities?
  • For how long will I need this help?
  • How often will I need checkups?
  • Will I need any special follow-up care, such as physical therapy or home health services?
  • Does my insurance company need to approve my hospital stay before I am admitted?

What to Bring to the Hospital

  • Photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID
  • Insurance card and information
  • Pajamas, nightgown and robe, if you wish
  • Personal toiletries, such as shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, denture cream and face creams
  • Comfortable clothes to wear home
  • Money, no more than $10 in cash, to purchase newspapers, magazines, etc.
  • Assistive devices, such as walkers, crutches, canes, hearing aids or magnifying glasses labeled clearly with your name
  • A list of prescription medications, dosages and schedule (please ask your physician beforehand if you should bring any of your medications to the hospital)
  • Names and phone numbers of family members or friends to contact in an emergency
  • Written list of past hospitalizations, illnesses, surgeries and allergies
  • A copy of your Advance Directives, including the Living Will or Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, if you have such documents

Please do not bring:

  • Valuables such as cash, jewelry, credit cards and checkbooks. We cannot be responsible for your belongings. If you must bring valuables, please ask to have them deposited in the hospital safe.
  • Personal electrical appliances, such as hair dryers, curling irons, electric shavers, heating pads, television sets, radios and cellular telephones

Interpreter Services

If you need language assistance, an interpreter will gladly be provided to you free of charge. Please call Patient Relations at (336) 716-2273 or ask a staff member for assistance.

Chapel/Pastoral Services and Spiritual Support

Davis Memorial Chapel — located on the first floor between Watlington Hall and the Gray Building — is open 24 hours a day. For a schedule of services and information about special events or to see a chaplain, call ext (336) 716-3409.

Gift Shops

  • NCBH Gift Shop is located on the Main Level of North Tower
    The Gift Shop is located in North Tower Lobby on the Main level, with the Outpatient Pharmacy. 
    • Our hours are:  Monday – Saturday   8:30am-8:00pm
                                           Sunday       1:00pm – 4:30pm

Mail Services

Mail Service is located on the Ground Floor of Watlington Hall.  Window Services are from 8:00am – 5:00pm  336-716-3515

Newspapers

Newspapers are available in the gift shop and in newspaper dispensers located near the Main Floor of North Tower.  

Laundry Facility

A laundry facility for patient/family member usage is located on the ground floor of the Progressive Care Building. Two washing machines and two dryers are available at no charge. Washing powder is available for sale in the vending machines located outside the laundry facility. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. There is a code that has to be used to get into the Laundry Room that is changed periodically. Please contact Patient Relations at 336-713-2273 for the code or for further information.

Shower Facility

Showers are available for patient visitors. The showers are located outside the Intensive Care waiting areas on the 4th and 5th floors in the North Tower.

Patient Belongings

The process for mailing patient belongings is handled by the Patient Relations Department. Every effort should be made to ensure that patients are discharged with all of their belongings. If it is necessary to return patient belongings after discharge, the belongings should be brought to the Patient Relations Department on the main level of Ardmore Tower with the appropriate form attached and completed which includes the patient's name, address and item(s) to be mailed.

Notary Public

If needed, the services of a notary public are available to you at no cost. For more information, call the Security Office at 336-716-3305.

Advance Directives

An advance directive is a legal document that tells your family, friends and health care professionals the care you would like to have if you become unable to make medical decisions. Through advance directives, you can make legally valid decisions about your future medical treatment.

You do not need a lawyer to complete your advance directives. However, you should be aware that each state has its own laws for creating advance directives.

There are three advance directives recognized in North Carolina:

  • The Medical Power of Attorney appoints someone to speak for you any time you are unable to make your own medical decisions, not only at the end of life. Your attending physician must certify in writing that you are unable to make health care decisions and file the certification in your medical record.   
  • A living will, describes the kind of medical treatments or life-sustaining treatments you would want if you were seriously or terminally ill. A living will should be signed, dated and witnessed by two people, preferably individuals who know you well but are not related to you and are not your potential heirs or your health care providers.
  • The Out-of-Hospital Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order provides you with the right to withhold or withdraw cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or other treatments such as defibrillation and artificial ventilation.

By creating an advance directive, you are making your preferences about medical care known before you're faced with a serious injury or illness. This will spare your loved ones the stress of making decisions about your care while you are sick. Any person 18 years of age or older can prepare an advance directive.

In order to make your Directive legally binding, you must sign it, or direct another to sign it, in the presence of two witnesses.
