Ben Curti, LRT/CTRS
Recreation Therapist - Oncology
Initially a Special Education major, Ben became interested in RT after volunteering at the 1978 Winter Special Olympic Games while a student at Central Michigan University. "It was a weekend the changed my entire career focus...a fabulous event!"
A native of Port Huron, Michigan, Ben graduated from Central Michigan University with a B.A. in Therapeutic Recreation (1980) and holds a M.S. in Recreation Administration (TR Emphasis) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1989). Ben has been certified as a LRT/CTRS since 1980, and has worked with cancer patients at WFBH since 1991. He has an extensive clinical background including work in mental health, burns, eating disorders, chronic pain, visually impaired and alcohol/substance abuse. His primary professional interests include the expressive arts modality, research, supervising interns and presenting at workshops.
Ben is licensed by the state of North Carolina (LRT) and certified at the national level (CTRS). He is a member of the North Carolina Recreation Therapy Association. Ben has been involved as a co-chair for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County National Cancer Survivor's Day Committee since 1991. Past ATRA Treatment Network Oncology Coordinator and Member at Large for the ATRA Board of Directors 2004-2006. He was also an Adjunct Teacher at Winston-Salem State University from 2005-2009.
In his leisure time, Ben enjoys playing around on his bass guitar, keyboards, and spending time with his wife and four children. When he has a chance to venture back to Michigan in the winter, he enjoys cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding and occasionally wandering around in a blizzard or two. Last but not least, Ben is a die hard Michigan Wolverine, Michigan State Spartan, Central Michigan Chippewa, and Detroit Red Wings fan. And yes, he also follows the UNC Tarheels!
