Emergency General Surgery

Emergency general surgery is the comprehensive care of patients with surgical diseases which may require urgent or emergent intervention. Examples of diseases which fall under this specialty include appendicitis, cholecystitis, severe destructive soft tissue infection, internal or subcutaneous abscesses or intestinal perforation from any source.

Our program is staffed around the clock by experienced surgeons who are board certified in general surgery as well as surgical critical care.  This, combined with dedicated support staff and state of the art facilities leads to care that ensures the best possible outcomes for our patients.  While we manage patients across the spectrum of severity, our team brings particular expertise to the care of the most complex of emergency surgical patients. We welcome all transfer requests and an attending physician is available for consultation 24 hours a day at (PAL).

In addition to the provision of superior surgical care, our service participates in the education of fellows, residents and medical students.  Trainees are given  graduated responsibility as is appropriate and participate in the care of all patients. This provides exposure to the full range of emergency general surgical diseases and offers an outstanding learning opportunity. Protocols and forms used in the care of our EGS patients can be found here.
