Specialized Perineal Care

Postpartum perineal injury can have a profound negative impact on quality of life. At Wake Forest Baptist Health, we are committed to providing comprehensive care to mother and baby before and after birth.

We have created a specialized perineal care service, staffed by experts in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, for women suffering from any vaginal trauma related to delivery. The primary objective is to aid in healing and recovery, and to provide information about future mode of delivery.

Women with the following complaints may benefit from evaluation:

  • Anal sphincter tear at delivery (3rd-and 4th-degree tears)
  • Acute breakdown of perineal tear/episiotomy repair
  • Rectovaginal fistula
  • Persistent granulation tissue
  • Persistent pain with intercourse
  • Accidental bowel leakage
  • Anatomic deformity of perineum or vagina
  • Persistent urinary leakage three months postpartum
