Primate Colonies in Residence at the WFUPC

WFUPC020

The Wake Forest University Primate Center (WFUPC) is located on 38 fenced and secured acres within the 200-acre Friedberg campus. The WFUPC is located ten miles away from the Medical Center/Bowman Gray Campus and consists of buildings for housing nonhuman primates and mice as well as a large complex of laboratories and offices. The WFUPC has its own animal resources unit, supervised by an investigator and staffed by professionals with long experience in caring for nonhuman primates and other animals.

Currently funded grants support active research protocols totaling 18 million dollars in direct support from NIH and other sources. Most of these protocols employ cynomolgus monkeys and African green monkeys. The majority of animals on active research protocols are located on the Friedberg Campus, and most are housed in social groups.

All Primate Center staff complete required training in environmental enrichment methods for nonhuman primates, and an Environmental Enrichment Coordinator helps to ensure that the housing areas are stimulating and comfortable, with plenty of opportunities species-appropriate activities and social interactions. The enrichment efforts include provision of structures suitable for climbing as well as shelter; plenty of open spaces; and puzzles, toys, and other activities designed to alleviate boredom as well as to provide psychological benefits to the animals.

All food is prepared on-site in our Diet Preparation Lab, ensuring high-quality, nutritious food, and enabling researchers to strictly control experimental diets.
