2009 Neuroscience Research Day Brings Together WNCSfN Students, Postdocs, and Faculty for Fun, Science, and a little Competition

The Western North Carolina Chapter conducted its Neuroscience Research Day on December 16, 2009. The event kicked off with a morning poster session in the Commons Hall of the Nutrition Center on the Hawthorne campus of the Wake Forest University School Medicine.  WNCSfN Students and Postdocs presented posters arranged in four thematic areas – Behavioral, Systems, or Cellular Neuroscience and Postdoctoral Research.  Presenters were judged within a theme by panels of faculty experts including our keynote speaker for the event, Michael Platt, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and Professor at Duke University.  A large audience of students and faculty gathered for the poster session and, over a pizza lunch hosted by the chapter, had the opportunity to become more familiar with WNCSfN research.  “Mary A. Bell” Awards for the best posters were announced prior to the public lecture – the winners can be found here.

The public lecture was delivered by Dr. Platt following the poster session.  His “Neuroeconomics of Social Learning and Decision Making” generate great interest for students, postdocs, and faculty alike -- bringing together neuroscientists from across the Medical School and undergraduate campuses. Coffee and refreshments topped off the event.

The WNCSfN also used the Neuroscience Research Day to promote the use of animals in research. The continued escalation of animal activism across the world, including increasing violence directed at scientists and organizations involved in biomedical research, represents a serious threat. Using materials provided by the Foundation for Biomedical Research, the Chapter made available brochures and publications informing attendees of the significance, necessity, and benefits of animal research.
