Thomas Shupe, PhD, Instructor

Thomas Shupe, PhD, is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He earned master’s and doctoral degrees from Albany Medical College. Dr. Shupe has 15 years of experience working with animal models for liver disease and liver regeneration. His training has been administered by Dr. Stewart Sell and Dr. Bryon Petersen, both of whom are considered pioneers in the liver stem cell field.

Dr. Shupe was instrumental in the characterization of G-CSF in liver regeneration and has vast experience with the techniques and animal models contained within this proposal. He was the first to publish a method for the decellularization of intact liver and is currently working to develop applications for this new technology.

AREA OF INTEREST: Dr. Shupe’s specific areas of research have included establishing a rat liver cancer cell line, characterizing an adult mouse model of glycogen storage disease, determining the potential of liver progenitor cells as a potential origin of liver tumors and examining the fusion events in different stem-cell-aided liver regeneration models.
