Doug Ririe, MD

Dr. Ririe has been involved in both clinical and basic science research throughout his career. His laboratory research focuses on peripheral neuronal afferent sensory processing. His ultimate goal is to initiate targeted pain treatment regimens and reduce the long term impact of pain. In particular, novel treatments and interventions are being developed to modulate peripheral nociceptive input responsible for the underlying neuroplasticity in pain syndromes and producing central nervous system effects from pain during critical periods of development.
Dr. Ririe received an M.D from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. from Wake Forest with training under Dr. Maria Fitzgerald at University College London and Dr. Jim Eisenach at Wake Forest University. He is the recipient of numerous awards for research and teaching and many research and clinical fellows have worked with him. In addition to his research, Dr. Ririe serves as Section Head of Pediatric and Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. He serves on numerous hospital committees, several boards, participates in national anesthesiology societies, and has extensive international health care initiatives. He serves on the Anesthesia Council of Operation Smile and has participated in many health care missions throughout the world. He is recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America annually since 2004.
