Freedman-BarryDr. Freedman received his B.S. from Brooklyn College, CUNY, in 1980 and his M.D. from Downstate Medical Center, SUNY, in 1984. He completed his internship and residency at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, which was followed by a fellowship at Bowman Gray School of Medicine from 1987-1989. He is board certified in internal medicine, specializing in nephrology.

SYNOPSIS OF AREA OF INTEREST: Teaching: Clinical Nephrology, Hypertension, Atherosclerosis, and Type 2 Diabetes; Research: Genetic Susceptibility to Atherosclerosis and Hypertensive/Diabetic Nephropathy; Ethnic Differences in Kidney Disease and Atherosclerosis; Clinical: General Nephrology, Kidney Transplantation and Cardiovascular Disease.

DETAILED AREA OF INTEREST: Dr. Freedman and his associates in the Center for Human Genomics and Department of Public Health Sciences have worked at the WFSM for the past 16 years to identify genes that cause common kidney diseases, atherosclerosis, essential hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. His group first detected the protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B gene association with type 2 diabetes mellitus and with atherosclerosis, as well as the carnosinase 1 gene association in type 2 diabetic nephropathy. He continues to explore interactions between genetic and environmental factors involved in complex kidney and cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
