Goals

The primary goal of the Fellowship Program at Wake Forest University is to train physicians for careers in either academic or private practice allergy or clinical immunology.  To accomplish this, an integrated two-year training fellowship has been designed, with the option of a third year for those fellows demonstrating interest and talent in pursuing an academic career.  We have developed a program that effectively teaches and assesses the six core competencies of (1) patient care, (2) medical knowledge, (3) practice-based learning and improvement, (4) interpersonal & communication skills, (5) professionalism and (6) systems-based practice.  New evaluation tools have been designed and implemented  for faculty and fellow evaluations.  We strive to review and assess information taken from written and verbal assessments by fellows and faculty to provide consistent recommendations and feedback to maximize the effectiveness of our educational program.

The initial year of training focuses on clinical allergy and immunology.  The second year continues this theme, but is designed to be flexible, assuring each fellow the opportunity to participate in clinical electives in related subspecialties including otolaryngology, dermatology, pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, etc.  In addition, the second-year fellow completes a required basic immunology course.  Opportunities for participation in clinical or basic research exist during all years of training.  After successful completion of the two year program, the fellow will meet all requirements for the American Board of Allergy and Immunology Subspecialty Board Examination in Allergy/Immunology.  Depending upon the productivity of research activities, the opportunity for an additional third year research position can be arranged on an individual basis.
