Major Goals of the Geriatrics Fellowship Training Program

The overall goal of the Wake Forest University Geriatrics Fellowship program is to produce graduates that become the next generation of academic and community leaders in Geriatric Medicine.  Our program is focused on developing physicians as competent and caring geriatricians in the core domains of competency as outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Graduates of our program are proficient in medical knowledge related to the nuances of disease processes, cognitive and functional assessment, and evidence-based treatment of older adults, and we encourage self-reflective practice and continual improvement.  We believe it is critically important for geriatricians to be knowledgeable about the healthcare system for the elderly, financing, and medical direction in the clinical venues specializing in the care of older adults (such as long term care).

Through our extensive research operation and interaction with interdisciplinary faculty members of diverse backgrounds, fellows also develop skills of critical appraisal of literature and are given opportunity to participate in research and quality improvement projects.  Recognizing that geriatricians will be leaders in the care of older adults within academic centers and community practices, we also believe that fellows should develop teaching and presentation skills to communicate effectively with colleagues and learners.
