Dr. William Applegate, former Dean of the School of Medicine, superb clinician, and national medical leader, has recently had to become a patient himself, having been diagnosed with cancer. With his chemotherapy behind him, he is now fortunately doing remarkably well. In his journey, however, he has been touched by the excellence of care and the high level of compassion he has received, and has marveled at the high level of courage and hope and resiliency he has seen in both his doctors and in his fellow patients. From his unique vantage point, Dr. Applegate has discovered that there are wonderful stories out there every day that are worth telling. Stories that are good for us to hear. Stories that are good for our patients, present and future. Oasis has been fortunate enough to have Dr. Applegate direct this section of the publication, with the help of the Associate Dean for Education, Dr. K. Patrick Ober, and the Senior Associate Dean, Dr. Steven Block. With each issue of Oasis, an essay written by Dr. Applegate, other practitioners, or patients will appear in this section. Each essay focuses on an individual patient, provider, or teams of providers, and ends with a conclusion that is succinct and addresses a specific issue related to improving the values or quality in health care. Enjoy!
