Internship in nurse anesthesia provides an opportunity for a limited number of individuals to gain valuable experience in the field of nurse anesthesia. The internship is unpaid, and the time commitment, specific hours of involvement, and activities will be tailored to the needs of the individual.
There are limited opportunities for internship positions, and selection of intern(s) will be based upon the availability of the pool of interns at a given time and the needs of the department. Selection will be based upon the information provided in the internship applications submitted in order to select individuals for whom individual and departmental goals intersect to result in the most fruitful experience. The internship is best suited for a nursing student or student of a related major who would like to pursue a career in intensive care with an ultimate goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist. The work that the intern performs requires some knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and some nursing procedures, since the interns have to maneuver in the sterile environment of the operating room.

- Interns must undergo an orientation process to meet Joint Commission requirements. Orientation is held from 1-4 pm on the assigned date.
- Some requirements of this may include obtaining required immunizations.
- The intern must send the following documentation for review by Employee Health Services. (Documents must be received prior to start date.)
- Immunization records – must include measles (2), mumps (2), rubella, chicken pox (proof vaccine or titer) and tetanus
- Proof of seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccination
- TB skin test results – must not be older than one year
- Intern purchases parking pass/badge in Risk Management/Medical Center Identification, located on the third floor, Meads Hall. Hours are 8:30 am – 12:30 pm and 2:30 – 4 pm, Monday – Friday.
- Fee is $10, payable by check or money order (non-refundable) made out to NCBH
- The intern is to act under the supervision and direction of their preceptor(s), and should not act in any way as a health care provider, even if they have achieved certain certifications or received education in particular aspects of nursing or medical practice.
- The intern will be exposed to private health information, and must attest to maintaining confidentiality of information observed in records or in person regarding the medical history and care of patients in the hospital.
- The intern acknowledges that by the nature of being present in a patient care institution, they may be exposed to various health hazards. The intern agrees to follow universal precautions when in patient care areas, and agrees to indemnify the hospital for liability for adverse health outcomes which result from participating in this internship.
