Edward Abraham, MD

Edward Abraham, MD, has led the Wake Forest School of Medicine as dean since August 2011.

He is a native of Chicago who is internationally distinguished in pulmonary medicine and as a critical-care physician. He also is an accomplished scientist with continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health for more than 25 years, has published more than 300 original research articles, reviews, editorials and book chapters, and he holds four patents.

Since coming to Wake Forest, Dr. Abraham has focused on:

  • Refining research efforts on areas where the school can lead the nation
  • Overseeing an extensive review and update of the curriculum
  • Recruiting nationally and internationally recognized individuals for key leadership roles
  • Renewing the effort to provide financial assistance to our aspiring leaders in medicine

Before being named Dean, Dr. Abraham served as Chair of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for 5½ years.

“It is very clear to me that Wake Forest Baptist is a very special place – a terrific institution at a watershed moment in its history,” Dr. Abraham said. “Right now we have the potential to become a transformational leader in defining the future of medicine. We have all the tools – the exceptional faculty, the amazing staff, great leadership, a newly integrated health care system and an entrepreneurial tradition that is truly unique.”
