Welcome Message from the Program Director

image001_1301078236Molecular genetic research is fundamentally important to the field of medicine and to the elucidation of the basic mechanisms of biological systems. The identification of the genetic basis of diseases has accelerated rapidly as a result of dramatic advances in molecular genetics and new discoveries will lead to innovative, effective treatments for many human genetic diseases. Investigations of basic biological mechanisms by scientists in every field of medical research rely increasingly on molecular genetic methods.

The Molecular Genetics and Genomics Program at Wake Forest School of Medicine is a research and PhD training program that prepares scientists for careers in molecular biology research and teaching. The Molecular Genetics and Genomics Program includes a broad range of molecular biologists from the faculty in each of the basic science departments and several of the clinical departments of the medical school. This diversity of faculty provides students with a variety of training options and the ability to tailor their research training to meet their individual interests.

The program seeks enthusiastic, highly motivated students with the desire to become successful scientists in academia and industry. Our institution is recognized for its strong research programs that rank us among the top U.S. medical schools receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health. At the same time, the research faculty is of a moderate size that encourages direct, personal attention to our graduate students.
