The PGY2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is a 12-month full-time ASHP accredited postgraduate training experience based within the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist System. Building upon the competencies established during postgraduate year one, the program focuses on developing clinical, analytical, teaching and leadership skills as it relates to the internal medicine patient. The program is individualized for each resident based upon his or her goals, interests and previous experience.

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is a health care system composed of an academic medical center surrounded by multiple community hospitals and a network of clinics. The geographic referral area for Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is large, and the patient population served is diverse. This means the PGY2 internal medicine pharmacy resident will gain experience managing a wide array of disease states across the spectrum of care.

Comprehensive Training

The PGY2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program offers a wide range of rotation experiences with the flexibility to customize each rotation to fit the resident’s goals. Outside of rotations, longitudinal opportunities across the health system provides the resident with experience in meaningful quality improvement projects though research, order-set and policy review, as well as medication use evaluations.

Residents are offered extensive opportunities for teaching and precepting students. Wake Forest Baptist takes APPE and IPPE students from three local schools of pharmacy. The resident will be expected to serve as a preceptor and mentor for pharmacy learners as well as lead topic discussions throughout the year. The resident will also provide formal lectures and in-services to learners in various healthcare disciplines (medical, nursing, physician assistant programs).

The practice experience component of the program consists of acute and critical care coverage, which allows the resident to develop experience triaging multiple tasks and patient care needs.
