I-94 Record

The I-94 number is the “Arrival/Departure Record” issued by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) whenever you enter the United States. This record confirms that you have been legally admitted to the US in a specific visa status, and for duration of time.

If you arrive by air, the CBP will confirm your immigration status by swiping your passport. If you arrive by land, you may be issued a paper I-94 record. Otherwise, you can retrieve your I-94 record electronically. (See link under “Retrieving Your I-94 Record” below.)

The I-94 number is the 11-digit number indicated at the top of the record. This is officially known as your nonimmigrant admission number. Your nonimmigrant classification is found within the date stamp on the card. It should have been stamped “J1.” The D/S notation should also be included underneath the visa category.

Duration of Status (D/S)

The notation “D/S” stands for duration of status. Duration of status means that you are here in legal J-1 status for as long as you remain in the US maintaining status. There is no specific end date noted on this card, which offers you some flexibility. This means if you need to extend your program because you can’t finish in time or if you’d like to continue your research/work at another level or institution, you may do so continuously without being required to exit the US. If your I-94 record does not indicate “D/S” you should contact the Office of International Services immediately.

Retrieving Your I-94 Record

After your arrival, you will need to retrieve your I-94 record at US Customs and Border Protection. Print it, and keep it with your passport. You will need to present the record to:

  • Apply for a driver’s license
  • Apply for a social security number
  • Open a bank account
  • Prove eligibility for employmen
