Inpatient Pediatrics

The Inpatient Pediatric Unit at High Point Medical Center provides state-of-the-art pediatric care in a family-centered care environment. At High Point Medical Center, we understand that when a child is ill, it affects the whole family. Parents are an important part of their child’s care team.

Our inpatient pediatric team is committed to providing your child with the best medical care, along with any necessary support services. Our team will provide each patient with highly personalized one-on-one care throughout their stay. Your child’s health and well-being are our top priority.

Visiting

Parents may visit anytime, day or night. Sleeper chairs are provided so that one parent may sleep in the child’s room, if desired. Shower facilities, towels and toiletry items are available for parents who stay overnight. Because children are more likely to carry infections, siblings and friends under age 12 must have the approval of your child’s nurse before visiting.

We encourage the child’s parent or guardian to stay with the child throughout their hospital stay.

Calling the Nurses Station

We welcome any comments or suggestions for ways we can better serve our patients and their families. Please feel free to share your thoughts directly with your child’s nurse or with the nurse manager on the Pediatric Unit. The telephone number for the Inpatient Pediatric Unit nurses station is 336-878-6072.  While you are away from the hospital, please feel free to call and talk with your child’s nurse anytime.

Meals

Depending on your child’s medical conditions and the doctor’s medical plan of care, an on-site pediatric trained dietitian will provide nutrition education, assess nutritional needs and make changes to diet orders as appropriate.

You can order meals for your child at any time from 6 am – 8:30 pm.  A pediatric menu will be provided, but you are welcome to order from our full menu if preferred.

If your child is of breastfeeding age, we do encourage moms to continue breastfeeding during your child’s stay at High Point Medical Center. There will be formula available if requested.

We understand that leaving to go purchase a meal for yourself can at times be stressful for you and your child. We provide complimentary meals for one caregiver. Additional guests’ trays may be purchased for $7.53 by calling extension 6368.

For your convenience, there is a cafeteria and vending machines on the hospital campus (located on the first floor).

What to Bring

Everything your child needs (including hospital gown, diapers and personal hygiene items) will be provided by the hospital. However, younger children sometimes feel more comfortable when they have familiar items from home. Feel free to bring your child’s favorite toy, stuffed animal, slippers, pajamas, blanket, toothbrush and toothpaste, or other belongings. Please do not bring any valuables to the hospital.

Our Gift Shop is stocked full of various items that will make your child’s stay easier. Located on the Lobby Floor, the Gift Shop supplies magazines, stuffed animals, books and more.

Books and DVD Library

Reading and watching movies can help take your child’s mind off of medical problems and relieve stress. The Inpatient Pediatric Unit has partnered with the High Point Public Library to provide a variety of books and DVDs for use by pediatric patients. These can be requested during your child’s stay.

Going Home

Before your child is discharged, we will discuss with you the care they will need at home. Please let your nurse know as early as possible if you or your child will need any special assistance at home – such as transportation for doctor’s appointments, help with filling prescriptions or help caring for your other children. A discharge planner can put you in touch with community agencies that can help with these services.

We welcome any comments or suggestions for ways we can better serve our patients and their families. Please feel free to share your thoughts directly with your child’s nurse or with the nurse manager on the Pediatric Unit.
