A micro diskectomy or decompression surgery removes all or part of the cushion (disc) that helps protect the spinal column.

It is most often used to relieve pain and pressure caused by a herniated, or slipped, disc or spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal).

While nonoperative treatments may help, you may need surgery if you have pain, numbness or severe muscle weakness in your lower legs.

This procedure is performed in a hospital or outpatient setting, under general anesthesia.
