Adaptive Water Skiing Workshop to be Held for People with Disabilities

People with disabilities are invited to participate in a free workshop this summer, sponsored by Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, that will teach adaptive water skiing.

Called "Making Waves 3," the workshop is designed to help patients with disabilities include water skiing as part of their recreational activities.

The workshop will run from 11 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Spencer Moose Lodge, High Rock Lake in Spencer, N.C.

Check-in for volunteers will be at 8 a.m.

There is no charge for the program.

"This program will help people with disabilities enjoy outdoor, summer activities in a safe environment," said Celia Dixon, a recreation therapist for Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and an instructor for "Making Waves 3."

The faculty for "Making Waves 3" includes Dixon and other recreation therapists from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

In addition to her background in aquatic and adaptive sports rehabilitation, Dixon has also worked with the Triad Trackers, a wheelchair basketball team, and the Piedmont Brain Injury Support Group.

All workshop participants need to bring bathing suits, life jackets, folding chairs, picnic food and sunscreen. Anyone with special needs should call at least five working days prior to the program to provide time for appropriate arrangements.

Disabled participants must be at least 6 years old and demonstrate an ability to turn themselves from a face-down to a face-up position in the water. Participants must weigh less than 250 pounds and have an injury that is at least a year old.

To register and receive more information on the workshop, please call (336) 713-8394. The deadline for preregistration is Aug. 10. Attendance will be limited.
