Art Exhibit Examining Child Abuse Opens at WFUBMC

Tapestries of Hope, an art exhibit exploring the effects of child abuse, will open at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Wednesday, Oct. 10.

The installation consists of four, five-foot long tapestries, decorated with drawings, words, poems and statements from children and adults who have been directly or indirectly affected by child abuse.

Local artists Patti Hricinak and Deborah D. Williams created the art project. Hricinak and Williams are the recipients of the 2001 Dr. Clifford and Elizabeth Guy Award presented by the Winston-Salem Arts Council''s Society of Arts and Medicine.

Tapestries of Hope was created in conjunction with Exchange-SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now). Representatives of anti-child abuse organizations and similar service agencies will be available to answer questions on the subject during the reception, which will include remarks by Sara H. Sinal, M.D., professor of pediatrics and family and community medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Sinal, a pediatrician at Brenner Children''s Hospital and Health Services is as an expert in identifying cases of child abuse.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Visual and Performing Arts Committee at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The public is invited to a 4 p.m. reception at the North Tower Lobby. Admission is free.
