Medical Ethics Expert To Speak At Wake Forest on Ethics, Reason and Faith

Edmund D. Pellegrino, M.D., who founded and now directs the Center for Clinical Bioethics at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, will speak at Wake Forest University School of Medicine on ethics, reason and faith.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2001 in Babcock Auditorium at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Free parking will be available in the Hawthorne employees parking deck across Hawthorne Road from the auditorium.

Pellegrino, John Carroll Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics at Georgetown, will appear as part of Wake Forest University''s Year of Ethics and Honor.

He is author of seventeen books, including Humanism and the Physician, A Philosophical Basis of Medical Practice, Christian Virtues in Medical Practice, and Helping and Healing, and was founding editor of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy.

Pellegrino, now 80, also had a distinguished academic career, including vice president of the health sciences, dean of the school of medicine and director of the Health Sciences Center at the State University of New York in Stony Brook from 1966 to 1973, chancellor and vice president for health affairs at the University of Tennessee from 1973 to 1975, president and chairman of the board of directors at Yale-New Haven Medical Center from 1975 to 1978 and president of the Catholic University of America from 1978 to 1982. Since then has held a variety of ethics posts at Georgetown.
