Wake Forest Sponsors 10th Annual Student National Medical Association Banquet

The Wake Forest University School of Medicine chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) will sponsor the Tenth Annual SNMA Medical Excellence Banquet at 6 p.m., Friday, April 23 at the Adams Mark hotel. The public is invited to attend.

Randall W. Maxey, president of the National Medical Association, will be the keynote speaker. A nephrologist, Maxey has a distinguished career in academia, research and professional leadership. He has made significant contributions to scientific literature related to the prevention and management of kidney failure and hypertension, and more recently in the growing area of cultural competence of health-care providers.

Maxey obtained his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy in 1966 and concurrently, doctorate in cardiovascular pharmacology from Howard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and a medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1972.

The SNMA is a national organization of medical students established to improve recruitment and retention of minority students, to increase the number of minority physicians and to improve access to health care in under-served communities. The Wake Forest chapter has formed alliances with various community organizations including: Carolina LifeCare, where members helped coordinate a tissue and organ donation drive; the Best Choice Center, where members tutored students in the after school program; the Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Piedmont, where students donated food and toys during the holidays; and a student sponsored community health fair.
