Wake Forest Medical Alumni Association Recognizes David L. Kelly Jr., M.D.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- David L. Kelly Jr., M.D., is the 2008 recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award presented by the Medical Alumni Association of Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

William B. Applegate, M.D., dean of the medical school, presented the award at the annual Dean’s Leadership Circle dinner on Oct. 16.

Kelly began his association with the medical school as a surgery intern at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in 1959, and began his teaching career with the school in 1966 as an assistant professor in neurosurgery. He served as the department’s chairman from 1978-2000.

Kelly graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959. His postdoctoral training included neurosurgery residencies at N.C. Baptist Hospital and at Children’s Hospital in Boston, and a fellowship in neurophysiology at Washington University in St. Louis. From 1964 to 1965 he served as chief resident of neurosurgery at Baptist Hospital. His visiting faculty appointments have included Johns Hopkins University Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine. He has also served with the Wake Forest University School of Law as visiting lecturer in law and forensic medicine.

UNC-CH has also recognized Kelly with its Distinguished Service Award. He has also received the Harvey Cushing Medal of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and an Honorary Degree in Medical Law from the WFU School of Law. He has been named one of Good Housekeeping’s “400 Best Doctors in America.”

Kelly has been a member of the Rotary Club of Winston-Salem since 1965, and has served on the board of directors of the YMCA of Forsyth County and on the board of trustees of Forsyth Country Day School.
