Wake Forest Medical Student Awarded Prestigious Scholarship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Bryant Cameron Webb, a medical student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, has been awarded the Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

According to the AAMC, this scholarship is awarded to five students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care. The recipients also demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing educational, societal and health care needs of minorities. Each of the five recipients received a $5,000 scholarship.

Webb has been working with the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity, part of Wake Forest University Health Sciences, since 2007. The Angelou Center funded his research project that involved evaluating the role of legislation in addressing health disparities. He has received one of the David Satcher Research Fellowships sponsored by Pfizer and the Student National Medical Association to continue that research project this year.

A native of Fredericksburg, Va., Webb received a bachelor of arts in medical anthropology from the University of Virginia. He completed the post-baccalaureate premedical program at Wake Forest before enrolling as a medical student in the fall of 2006. He serves as the president of the class of 2010 and has had an active role in establishing the first student-run health clinic, the DEAC (Delivering Equal Access to Care) clinic.

Webb was presented the Nickens Scholarship at the 2008 AAMC Annual Meeting in San Antonio on Nov. 3.
