You see them sigh, you think they whine
their eyes say “could you spare some more time?”
Your schedule’s too hectic
to grant their implores.
Your eyes on the clock
and your hands on the door.
Where is that person
who used to build rapport?
Who stopped, looked, and listened
not cutting them off, but
addressed their complaints
whether chest pain or cough.
To practice medicine fully
means more than scripts and pen,
means more than status quo and making
visits end.
Next time a longer encounter
is only time you’ll lose
Take some time to consider how you’d
feel in your patient’s shoes.
