Pilot Project Proposals

Core A: Pilot Studies Program
Sara R. Jones, Core Director

The purpose of this program is to provide a small level of funding ($15,000 per year) for one or two years for drug abuse-related studies. Investigators funded by our Pilot Studies program fall into two categories. First, pilot funds are provided to young investigators, who by using Center resources and interacting with established investigators, are provided with opportunities for generating their own research programs and generate independent funding. The Core Director, Dr. Sara Jones, will provide individual mentorship for junior investigators during the pilot study period to promote career development. Second, pilot studies may come from more established investigators who share common interests within the Center’s specific themes; in these cases, pilot studies can be used to bring new technology from other fields into our Center or to allow current Center investigators to explore novel research areas.

In order to qualify as pilot study within the structure of the Center, an application should fit the following criteria: 1) it should fit within the overall goals of the Center; 2) it must involve interactions with Center investigators and projects; and 3) it must be of a quality such that, if successful, would have a reasonable chance for extramural funding. Requests for applications will be developed and advertised throughout the Wake Forest School of Medicine community. Underrepresented minority groups of new and early stage investigators will be prioritized in the evaluation criteria. Each proposal will be evaluated for scientific merit/innovation and for relatedness to the Center's overall goals by at least two members of the Center's Executive Committee (and in some cases, other external experts in the scientific field), the Pilot Core Director, and the Center Director. Recommendations for funding will be approved by the Center’s Executive Committee and the NIDA Program Officer.
