Class of 2017

 Binder Kyle

Kyle W. Binder, MD, PhD
Hometown:  New York City, NY
Undergraduate:  BS, University of Virginia
Medical School:  MD/PhD, Wake Forest University School of Medicine
Neurology Interests:  Neuroimmunology

I was born in New York City and lived in Charlottesville, VA for a number of years before heading to Winston-Salem for my MD/PhD degrees.  For my PhD, I designed and build a skin bioprinting system to repair burn wounds.  I’d like to extend some of those techniques to nerve repair.  My wife, Nancy, is the best part of my life.  We enjoy sports, exercising, good movies, and of course, romantic dinners on the beach.

Kevin J. Brenzy, DO
Hometown:  Masontown, PA
Undergraduate:  BS, California University of Pennsylvania
Medical School:   DO, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
Neurology Interests:  Sports Neurology & Multiple sclerosis

I grew up in a small town south of Pittsburgh in Masontown, PA. I received a BS from California University of PA and went to medical school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. I am currently in my last year of residency and will be completing my Neuromuscular fellowship here at Wake Forest.

My wife and I were blessed to have a little baby boy, Landon James, in March. He looks just like me. If I am not spending time with my new family, I am rooting for Pittsburgh sports teams, flying my drone, or golfing just to name a few.

Neurology Interests:  Neuro-critical Care

Hey!  My name is Arvind Gomadam and I am a 4nd year Neurology Resident at Wake Forest.  I am from a small city and spent most of my years in Georgia.  I met my wife as a first year medical student in Augusta, GA and before I knew it I was married and starting my training in neuro.  Both my wife and I enjoy the city of Winston-Salem.  She is a 2rd year cardiology fellow here.  We loved the family-oriented atmosphere at Wake, and have made many close friends over the past several years.  Outside the hospital, I enjoy spending time with my wife, running, GEORGIA FOOTBALL, watching ATLANTA FALCONS, eating Thai food, watching movies, gaming on PS4, and just enjoying life.

Sweeney Erica

Erica Sweeney, MD – Co-chief Resident
Hometown:  Macomb, IL
Undergraduate:  Marshall University, Huntington, WV
Medical School:  Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine Huntington, WV
Neurology Interests:

Since moving to WS, my husband and I have most enjoyed trying new things together, like Mozelle’s downtown and local wineries.  My husband and I come from a small town in WV and feel like Winston-Salem has a nice community feel while having plenty of new things to do and try.  We’ve made a lot of new friends, fellow residents and their spouses, as well as neighbors.  We both like living a little further out from the city so we bought a house in Clemmons, which is a nice 15 minute car ride to and from work.  Everyone at WFUBMC has been exceptionally nice; I was pleasantly surprised to be welcomed so readily as a prelim in the internal medicine program.  Residents and fellows, as well as attendings, have all been very approachable and willing to help across all programs.

Resident Quang Vu

Quang Vu, MD – Chief Resident
Hometown: Annandale, Virginia
Undergraduate: BA, University of Virginia
Medical School: MD, Medical College of Virginia
Neurology Interests: Neuro-intensive care, Stroke

Hey! I’m Quang. I’m a fourth year Neurology resident. I’ve spent most of my childhood growing up in Northern Virginia. Moving to North Carolina for residency was a big change for me. It’s been an awesome experience for me. Everyone has been welcoming and friendly. I definitely don’t miss the traffic in Northern Virginia! I live about 10 minutes from the medical center.  During my free time, I love playing the guitar and working out. I used todo computer science so I’m really big on the latest techs/ gadgets.  I go hiking a lot during my free weekends.

Cortez-Garcia Eduardo

Eduardo Cortez-Garcia, DO
Hometown:  Guadalajara, Mexico
Undergraduate:  BS, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL
Medical School:  DO, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Suwanee, GA
Neurology Interests:

Hola! I love my residency experience at Wake Forest. The residency is busy, but it provides exposure to an abundant patient population that will make you a more than competent neurologist. The faculty and staff treat you as family and are very supportive, which is what mainly attracted me to this residency. I come from a Latin background who views family as a key feature to success.  An added bonus is that the weather here is ideal year round and I’m able to enjoy all of the seasons while rarely seeing extreme weather.

Hoffman Mark

B. Mark Hoffman, MD
Hometown:  Knoxville, TN
Undergraduate:  BS, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN
Medical School:  MD, East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine, Johnson City, TN

Hello, I’m Mark.  I was born and raised in Tennessee but finally migrated from the other side of the mountains to Winston-Salem for residency.  The supportive environment at Wake Forest has been a great place to train as both a medicine prelim and now as a neurology resident.  When not working, I like to go hiking and camping or just hang out with friends.

I grew up in South Carolina and went to the University of South Carolina for both undergrad and med school. My wife is a peds resident and we both love it here. Both of our programs have terrific people and are very family friendly. Winston-Salem is a small town but has lots of fun activities that we enjoy such as going to wineries and checking out some of the local downtown festivals. I love traveling, hiking, and sports, especially college football. I'm a huge gamecocks fan and go to every game I can.

Hi! I’m Ethan Yun. I grew up in many different places but have lived in Virginia for most of my life. I have been thrilled to match here for residency and preliminary internal medicine. I have enjoyed making new friends. The environment at Wake Forest is supportive and collegial. There is a great variety of patients you see as a resident and there are many opportunities to learn and experience all the subspecialties in neurology. Winston-Salem has both the small town and city atmospheres which I have enjoyed. Outside the hospital, I like spending time with friends and family, watching good movies, exploring new places, eating out at local restaurants, and hiking.

Hello! My name is Justin and was born and raised in the midwest (Michigan/Indiana), met my wife (Alyssa) in undergrad an hour south of Chicago, and after venturing down to southwest Virginia for medical school have continued heading southward to NC… and we're loving it! I've always been told how friendly the Midwest is, but after coming to Winston-Salem, have really been blown away by the incredibly welcoming atmosphere of both WFBMC and the city of W-S itself. I was immediately impressed with the enthusiasm for teaching, high caliber of upper-level residents, and inviting atmosphere created by the staff and physicians. My Neurology interests are still pretty wide open at this point but am currently leaning towards Headache, Movement, or Cognitive Disorders. I’m interested in hiking, piano, and rock climbing but most of all enjoy spending free time with my wife, daughter and son.

Hi!  My name is Kayla Bowden, and I'm so happy to be a resident here at Wake Forest!  I grew up in an Oklahoma town of about 300 people, so moving halfway across the country has been an exciting adventure for me.  I'm a proud graduate of the University of Oklahoma, where I attended both undergraduate and medical school (Boomer Sooner!).  Even though I'll always be an Okie at heart, I had no doubt that Wake Forest was where I wanted to complete my Neurology residency.  In my free time I enjoy reading, watching movies, and OU football (of course).

There's not much else to do there other than attending Penn State football games, which I often do with my family!  I really enjoy listening to all kinds of music and discovering new art and music festivals.
