There are 74 parks  in the area that offer a variety of sporting activities including playgrounds, tennis courts, and basketball courts.

If you’re a hiker and/or a camper, just an hour’s drive is Pilot Mountain or Hanging Rock State Park for hiking for an afternoon or camping for the weekend. Also Grandfather Mountain, home of the Mile High Swinging Bridge, is a unique adventure.

For relaxing with the sand in your toes, Winston-Salem is close in proximity to beaches from the Outer Banks and Kitty Hawk, home of the Wright Brothers Memorial, to Wilmington with the USS North Carolina Battleship to 6 lighthouses located throughout the east coast of the state. On Shackleford Banks you will find wild horses and some of the most perfect shells while camping in the wilderness with only what you bring over by boat.

Interested in arts? Winston-Salem is home to the Stevens Center and Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts which hold live performances throughout the year in conjunction with the North Carolina School of the Arts and the River Run International Film Festival each spring. The Downtown Arts District offers unique locally made crafts and shopping experiences.

For the sport fan, Wake Forest Football and Basketball games along with The Dash Baseball games take place right here in the heart of Winston-Salem. The Charlotte Motor Speedway, just a little over an hour away, hosts the Coca Cola 600 each May and the Bank of America 500 each October.

Winston-Salem definitely offers a variety of experiences whether you’re living here or for guests who come for a visit while you’re completing your residency at our institution. Winston-Salem and North Carolina both have some of the most interesting and beautiful places to experience!
