Diploma and Awards Ceremony for the Class of 2015

The Wake Forest PA Program Class of 2015 had their Diploma and Awards Ceremony on the hot and sunny morning of Monday, May 18, 2015, at the Brendle Recital Hall on the Reynolda Campus. First-year student marshals Stevi Barrett, Kelly Conner, Samantha Dowless, Sadie Orlowski, and Lauren Sykes led the faculty and graduating class in procession. After an invocation from the Reverend F. Keith Stirewalt, PA, MBA, MDiv, and a welcome from PA Studies Chair Reamer L. Bushardt, PharmD, PA-C, the students received their diplomas from their faculty advisors and Program Director Zachary Hartsell, MPAS, PA-C. PA Studies Vice Chair L. Gail Curtis, PA-C, MPAS, then led the students in reciting the Physician Assistant Professional Oath.

During the awards portion of the ceremony, Samantha Dowless received the Katherine Anderson Award, which is given to a first-year student in recognition of exemplary academic performance and professional growth toward becoming a physician assistant during the preclinical year. Graduating student Kelly Wohler accepted the James Franklin Wilson Memorial Award as the student in the graduating class showing the greatest aptitude and devotion to the profession. Elizabeth Frost received the Mike Walker Physician Assistant Excellence Award for outstanding academic performance and demonstrating compassion and excellence in caring for patients. And Laura Fierke was the first winner of a new award – the Patrick and Cathy Ober Community Leadership Award, named for PA Program Medical Director K. Patrick Ober, MD, and his wife Cathy – given to honor a first-year or second-year PA student who has demonstrated remarkable dedication to community service and leadership in outreach, philanthropy, and humanitarianism.

The Class of 2015 also bestowed several awards on faculty. David M. White, MPAS, PA-C, won the Preclinical Year Teaching Excellence Award, and Jill P. Grant, MS, MMS, PA-C, received the Clinical Year Teaching Excellence Award. Robert Wooten, PA-C, was acknowledged with the Class Appreciation Award. And Janie McDaniel, MS, BSMT, MLS(ASCP)SC, received the Honorary Katherine Anderson Society Award.

After the Diploma and Awards Ceremony, students, faculty, and staff attended a graduation luncheon at the Forsyth Country Club hosted by Alumni Affairs. The faculty and staff of the Department of PA Studies congratulate the Class of 2015 and wish them the best of luck as they take their boards and move forward with their careers.
