Reamer Bushardt, PharmD, PA-C, is stepping into a new role as Associate Vice President for Workforce Innovation for Wake Forest Baptist Health. Dr. Bushardt has handed over the duties of program director for the PA Program to Associate Professor Zachary Hartsell but will continue to serve as Chair of the Department of PA Studies.

In response to the Affordable Care Act, Wake Forest Baptist Health continues to transform the way care is delivered. Dr. Bushardt will serve as the health system’s first Associate Vice President for Workforce Innovation. This critical leadership role will help position the health system as a leader in value-based care delivery and act as a catalyst for connecting and integrating health and wellness services for patients. Working with other clinical leaders within the health system, Dr. Bushardt will help optimize the workforce and support repositioning efforts to ensure cost-effective configurations that provide safe, high quality care and value for patients and families.

Since Dr. Bushardt joined Wake Forest in July 2010, the PA Program has experienced enormous success and transformational growth. From 2011-2012, he successfully led the program through its reaccreditation, earning the maximum award from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant. In 2013, he guided the development of an academic partnership with Appalachian State University to advance cross-institutional education, research, and workforce development. In 2014, he led the launch of a new distant campus for the PA Program in Boone, NC. Under Dr. Bushardt’s leadership and thanks to the collective efforts of all faculty and staff, applications to the PA Program have increased by more than 80 percent, extramural dollars from grants and contracts have risen by more than a million dollars, and faculty publications of peer-reviewed scholarly works have tripled.

Prior to joining Wake Forest, Dr. Bushardt served as PA division chief and practiced in family medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He currently serves as principal investigator for a federal grant and two foundation awards, and directs several consultant contacts, in the United States and internationally, focused on PA education and workforce development. He is editor-in-chief for the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and serves the Physician Assistant Education Association as a member of its Research Council and a clinical advisor in the areas of quality and safety.
